Whatever it is

The solo sculpture exhibition “Whatever It Is” was held in 2021 at Sharif Gallery, Tehran, in collaboration with Lena Yekta. Through this project, I explored the relationship between object, human, and meaning by experimenting with unconventional materials.

The works were created using hair, candles, thermal paper, wood, rusted iron, and glass. Thermal paper is unique: it changes color when exposed to heat. For this reason, I used an iron, candles, and a soldering tool to design patterns on these papers. Some pieces also included fragments typed on a 1960s typewriter, adding a historical and human dimension to the works.

Re-using discarded and consumed objects was essential to this series. By transforming their functions, I could generate new meanings. Hair, as a trace of the human body, symbolizes constant transformation and vulnerability to both internal and external forces. This gave me a powerful way to express my ideas in sculptural form.

For me, the most important aspect of “Whatever It Is” was not only the final outcome but also the creative process itself. The path of making was often complex and unpredictable. While difficult to fully describe in words, it is precisely this process that gave depth and meaning to the works.
